Carnivore and Sleep: Why Meat is the Ultimate Sleep Hack

Before I went carnivore, my sleep was a disaster. I would wake up at 3 AM with my mind racing, toss and turn for two hours, and finally drag myself out of bed feeling like I had been hit by a truck. I tried everything: melatonin, blackout curtains, no screens before bed. Nothing worked.
Then, I changed my diet. I dropped the carbs, loaded up on fat and protein, and suddenly, I was sleeping like a rock. Eight hours of deep, uninterrupted, glorious sleep.
It turns out, what you put on your plate has a massive impact on what happens when your head hits the pillow. If you are struggling with sleep, the answer might not be a pill. It might be a steak.

The Science of Meat and Sleep

Why does a carnivore diet fix broken sleep? It comes down to blood sugar, hormones, and micronutrients.
1. The Blood Sugar Rollercoaster
When you eat a carb-heavy dinner, your blood sugar spikes. Your body releases insulin to bring it down, but often overcompensates, causing a blood sugar crash in the middle of the night.
What happens when your blood sugar crashes?
Your body releases cortisol and adrenaline (stress hormones) to wake you up so you will eat. This is why you wake up at 3 AM with a racing heart.
On carnivore, your blood sugar stays perfectly flat. No spikes, no crashes, no 3 AM adrenaline dumps.
2. The Magnesium Factor
Magnesium is nature's relaxant. It calms the nervous system and prepares the body for sleep. While many people think they need to eat spinach to get magnesium, red meat is actually an incredible source of highly bioavailable magnesium. Plus, without the phytates and oxalates found in plants (which block mineral absorption), your body actually absorbs and uses the magnesium from meat much more efficiently.
3. Evening Meal Timing
Protein and fat take longer to digest than carbs. If you eat a massive steak right before bed, your body will be working hard to digest it while you are trying to sleep, which can raise your core body temperature and keep you awake.
The hack? Eat your last meal at least 3-4 hours before bedtime. Let your body finish the heavy lifting of digestion so you can slip into deep sleep.

The Bone Broth Nightcap

If you struggle to wind down at night, skip the chamomile tea and try a mug of warm beef bone broth with a pinch of high-quality sea salt.
Bone broth is loaded with glycine, an amino acid that has been shown in studies to improve sleep quality, lower core body temperature, and help you fall asleep faster. It is incredibly soothing, zero-carb, and the perfect carnivore-approved nightcap.
Eat this for dinner, wait a few hours, and get ready for the best sleep of your life.
